Hello I too have read on several occasions - in computer mags - that Windows 98 will not benefit from more than 512 MB of RAM. You may have 1G installed but maybe it makes no difference; you would have to do a test to confirm. Certainly I found the move from 256 to 384 insignificant. 128 to 256 did make a noticeable difference though.
As a final thought, are you sure your computer fell over? Sometimes with massive files it looks like it has crashed and is doing nothing and won't respond. However, if you go away and make and drink a cup of tea and come back in 15 mins it will have finished (sometimes it take in excess of half an hour!!!)
