I won’t claim to be an expert. But FWIW I do have several externals on my
system. Redundant backups.
I almost always buy from OWC.
Their drives are pre-formatted for Macs. I just go with their format.
To copy, I usually drag-and- drop a few folders at a time. Depends on copy
speed. I hate to start a large Copy process that will take 5-6 hours, I would
rather break that into 1-2 hours at a time. Superstition? I guess my reasoning
is that, if something goes wrong in process [power outage? Whatever…] then only
a relatively small chunk of my files will be affected.
But then it is a case of do-as- I-say, not as I do. Currently copying all my
2018 photo files to tertiary storage; estimated 10-hour job now in process.
