Toine, those are beautiful shots! Chestnuts were the dominant tree species here in Pennsylvania (and many other areas in the US) until a fungal blight arrived in 1904. Our house, built in 1886, has chestnut woodwork throughout. It is so resistant to rot that even our window frames are in fairly good shape.
Some stands of blight-resistant chestnut have been planted experimentally, but of course it will be years before their fate is clear. The European chestnut (fortunately for all of you across the pond) has been rescued by a virus that is a blight on the fungus.
