This weekend I had the opportunity to race with an organization called the 24 Hours of LeMons. I’ve heard about them for years, but this was my first event. A few weeks ago someone asked if I wanted to be one of the drivers of their car, all I had to do was pay a share of the expenses and show up and drive.
If you aren’t familiar with the organization, the rule is that other than safety equipment, you’re only allowed to spend $500 on the car and every team has to have a theme. The theme of this team is Seasame Street, and the ’97 Cabrio ended up being named Hellmo. While I was there I did get a couple of chances to play with my camera. Since I bought the Irix 11/4 I had not had the combination of free time, a dark night and clear skies. I’m pleased with the way it works, the detent at infinity focus and crazy depth of field makes it very easy to work with. Yeah, for astro work I wish it were faster, but astrotracer really helps with that. I didn’t mean to do a pano, but ended up with one that turned out pretty well of Hellmo and the milky way: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/52400649186/in/album-72177720302579779/ I got a couple of pretty good ones of Jose driving Hellmo, the 544 in the background is powered with a motor from a Chevy minivan and it would pass me on the straights like I was chained to a tree. https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/52401256598/in/album-72177720302572641/ Here’s one of Jose with a bit more pan blur: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/52401265248/in/album-72177720302572641/ I quite liked this Chevy powered Lotus, one of the cars I’d heard about for ages. It went like a scalded llama: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/52401150434/in/album-72177720302573661/ It has a sticker on the back of a James Bondish logo using 1337 rather than 007, I am embarrassed that it didn’t register until just a few minutes ago that it was on an Elite. Here’s a better shot of the 544 https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/52400361662/in/album-72177720302573661/ A few snaps that I took with my phone can be found here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/ZwPR9JHBAUH2wD2U7 The ’59 Bonneville was scary fast in the straights, while Hellmo was basically just Scary.
