I took a lot of pictures in Toledo. I’m posting these first because it’s a 
manageable set.

Before 1492, when the muslims and Jews were driven out, there were hundreds of 
synagogues in Spain. Only three remain, and only as museums; two are in Toledo. 
This is the Synagogue Santa Maria La Blanca, by far the best preserved.

It was designed by a Moorish architect and built about 1180, and after the Jews 
were driven from Toledo around 1400 it served as a church, a monastery (the 
monks gave the building its current name), and a warehouse. The Catholic Church 
still owns it, but maintains it as a museum and memorial.
