I cycle through Japan Town in San Jose very frequently and every time through I look at the monument there and wonder how I'd be able to photograph it. The ideal place to stand is right in the middle of a busy intersection…
The new ultra-ultra-wide lens gives me the opportunity to capture this monument in a way that I feel is satisfying: https://flic.kr/p/2giEHsU This monument carries on it a plaque that reads: "February 19, 1942" ... the date of Executive Order 9066, which gave the U.S. Army the authority to remove civilians from the military zones established in Washington, Oregon, and California during WWII. The monument commemorates that date as a reminder, and an opportunity to educate others, on the fragility of civil liberties in times of crisis and the importance of protecting the rights and freedoms of all. There's more information about it and the Day of Remembrance at https://jacl.org/events/day-of-remembrance/ Whenever I ride through Japan Town, I see the monument standing there in its mute testimony. I think of what it stands for and find myself deeply affected. onwards!
