I'm using a Canon Pixma iX6520 which in current printer terms is
ancient, I got it when my extremely inexpensive, i.e. cheap, HP 13x19
inch printer's print cradle jammed, and HP didn't want to hear about it,
when I wanted it repaired after the warranty expired. I was willing to
pay, they just didn't want to repair it. A big change from a few years
earlier when they sent me a new power supply, and didn't bother charging
me, and that for a printer long after it was out of warranty.
It cost me all of $100 when it was on sale at Staple's with a, with a
$50 rebate, if I turned in an old printer for recycling, (I wish I'd
turned in the HP but I still had hopes of having it fixed). So in a
way they were giving it away. It was cheaper than buying new inks for
my backup printer, (which I have around here somewhere, but I don't know
where).
I print enough to keep the heads from clogging, and I do one paid job a
year that pretty much pays for me keeping it running.
Both of these printers use CMYK inks, and strangely enough the
mechanisms look like clones of each other, though nothing is
interchangeable and the outer shells couldn't be more different.
I find the break even point is printing 8x10 or larger, but the main
reason I print for myself rather than sending my stuff to a an internet
printer, is the ability to have end to end control of the printing
process. Which was one of the reasons I used to do B&W processing and
printing.

By then the printer head will be clogged beyond repair if it isn't
already. Just fllogged off my Epson R2400 after wasting another 50
euros worth of ink trying to get it to work again. These are money
burning machines which would still be too expensive if they gave them
away.
