I used a 2400 prior to the 2880. I probably made 1000 prints with it, all quite nice. I only went to the 2880 when the band that moves with the carriage broke. It was getting long in the tooth anyway. I think Mark used one for quite a few years as well.
You probably just got a lemon. It happens.
