Got slabmaker running for a test with the stack I shot today right now.
Thanks for the tip!
Played around with some other slabbers last night, but this one looks
better. One minor annoyance is that it doesn't get UTF-8 right, so I
have to replace some odd symbols with proper Scandinavian letters. But
none of the other programs got it right either. :-)
Will post tomorrow if I learn something useful from this exercise.

I also use Zerene Stacker. I've experimented with slabs - making
sub-stacks and then stacking those together - but I personally did not
see any difference in the outcome. Doing multiple stacks and then
blending them together can help clean up banding, if that is what you
are experiencing. It's easy to miss an area in the image as you build
the stacks, but the odds of missing the same place(s) on a second and
third pass are pretty small. If you want to try slabs there is utility
called slabmaker that will help create a script for Zerene stacker to
use. Someone on flickr has made it available - don't recall who.

Thanks Mark,
I totally agree about the shadows. The lighting is overly dramatic
with just a single light source straight above.
The software I use is Zerene Stacker. It integrates fairly well with
Lightroom and is pretty straightforward to use, although I have yet to
learn how to control the blotchiness that envelops the bristles and
hairs. Maybe I don't run my stacks deep enough, or maybe I need to
look into the technique they call sub-stacking... I don't know. Lots
to learn... :-)

Excellent work, Jostein - the detail is very good. The lighting is very
dramatic but I'd like like to see a more detail in the shadows - the
eyes in particular. Out of curiosity - what stacking software are you
using?

Here's my first stacked bug. Not a live one, though.

Comments and ideas for improvement most appreciated.
