I'm in the process of refurbing a 2008 13 inch MacBook for one of my sons. Just replaced the logic board and got it booted from the original 10.4 DVD and now trying to get it running something a bit later. Ah just install El Capitan, you say. Not quite so fast Buster. First you have to get up to Mountain Lion. Ah but before that you have to get it up to Snow Leopard. Look - just tell me which hoops I have to jump through and how many.
all the 2008 MacBooks came with 10.5; the early 2008 models can't be upgraded past 10.7.5 (i've found that to be a pretty good version, but it can't sync the newest iOS devices)
i have a family member with a 2005 PowerBook (which was a recent upgrade from a 2001 purple iMac); it functions okay, but can't be upgraded past 10.5, which is a pain because that version of Safari chokes on some websites
