There used to be a need for third party Windows virus programs, but they have gotten so bloated these days (McAfee and Norton) that you basically have to choose whether you want virus protection or you want to get anything done on your computer. IMHO you no longer need anything more than Microsoft Security Essentials (free). Google it. Download/install it. Uninstall the other crap.
(This is coming from a guy who thinks that most Microsoft products are crap: Microsoft Security Essentials will protect you from viruses and spyware.)
