I'll answer for our cable co. (Comcast) It's true that most of out "basis" cable channels telecast both. We can receive either, but the SD picture is not pano unless we wish to distort it by a tuner choice. Not too good a picture in that case, however. Somewhat distorted We, also, have a different choice of channel numbers for each. My sister doesn't have HD and tells me she doesn't feel she's missing anything.
