there were certain Belkin hubs that borked on Mountain Lion; apparently Belkin used the same id as a Bluetooth device; the fix came with 10.8.2 which made a special case for that device
if one is considering a hub for charging devices as well as connectivity, the choice is harder; some devices won't charge, or will charge more slowly, if the hub supplies only the minimum amperage; there are different standards for supplying higher amperage; Apple (prior to Lightning connectors) used its own standard; devices are now standardizing on "BC 1.1" (and BC 1.2 on USB3), which works for Apple Lightning and several other current tablets & phones
