Dave, some are powered and can be helpful for certain USB peripherals that are heavy loads.
Be mindful that there's now USB 1.1, 2 and 3. So you need to know what your speed needs are. Personally, I'd stay away from the Dollerama ones, but The Source or Staples ones should be good enough for most things.
