Have you considered using a proprietary flash bounce system instead of a 
diffuser? I've seen one that you can velcro onto the the flash, providing 
an angled, diffused bounce, with the added benefit of moving the actual 
flash source further away from the camera, if the flash is hot-shoe 
mounted. Hard shadows and red-eye will be less of a problem, and the 
light is more flattering. I'm sure someone can point out a manufacturer 
and system.

When photographing groups of people stood chatting, try to keep the 
various subjects more or less the same distance away from the flash, or 
you'll get one or two foreground faces blasted away.

And finally - DON'T DRINK!
