Now my image isn't overtly manipulated, every element that was there is
still there. The only things I did were play with the luminance values
and contrast, as I would have done in traditional darkroom work, (which
was nearly impossible to do with color in the days before digitization),
based on Rhine II I;d bet that's not true of the work by Gursky. Are
both works derivative? Probably, I'm sure my vision was influenced by
some image I've seen somewhere, and I'll bet his was too. The only
difference is that his is Iconic while mine sells for $45.00, in local
art shows if it sells at all.
I think your problem is the lack of overt manipulation.
Take out the ramp on the left. Extend the ocean into the middle ground
on the right, cloning the horizon all the way across to remove the
beach, the houses, the land ... Blend the clouds into a uniform gray
nothingness.
And you too can sell wall size C-prints for millions of dollars.
Or you can just chalk it up to we already know art photography
collectors are idiots and keep on doing what you want to do. Hell,
Vincent Van Gogh never sold a painting in his life, and look what his
stuff is worth today.
FWIW, I like yours better than I like Gursky's. Do you have
refrigerator magnets?
If you want to pay enought I'll try printing on almost anything.
