Thanks for the input, all.

I've found out that the version of GIMP I downloaded does have color
management -- set at sRGB by default with an "Auto-Levels" function,
but it's a button buried in a dialogue box in an inconspicuous place,
without a shortcut in the "Image" menu.  Now, as to how effective the
"Auto" function is, I can't say.  I'm too new to this to be able to
give an opinion one way or the other.

That said, I do have an ancient version of Photoshop Elements (2.0)
that I got with a hard drive purchase many years ago.  Any thoughts as
to whether or not it would still be better to use than GIMP?
