I'm a "bang for the buck" kind of guy and I spent this past winter
wheeling & dealing to accumulate some nice macro gear on the used
market.

I'm quite sure that the Tamron AF 90mm f/2.8 Di SP A/M 1:1 Macro is a
GORGEOUS lens. However, with three daughter's weddings in two years'
time span, I have to be a bit "creative" in financing my photography
purchases. I'm not allergic to manual focus, and so I was able to get
a bunch of stuff for about the price of that single lens (Amazon:
$460) including:

Vivitar Series 1 90mm f2.5 with matching 1:1 Series 1 converter and
case in K-mount. (The $140 price also included a Genuine Pentax m42 to
K-mount adapter).
Tamron SP 90mm f2.5 Macro (52B) for $100.
Tamron SP F01 matched teleconverter for the above lens ($45)
S-M-C Takumar 50mm Macro f4 (free... bought a kit and sold unneeded items)
Benbo 1 tripod with multi-angle head ($120)
Panagor K-mount auto extension tubes ($45) *on the way*
Slik 2-axis macro focusing stage ($39)

Basically all I have left to acquire is a decent ring flash.

I think if people would get the thought that autofocus is a
requirement out of their minds, they'd be amazed at the arsenal of
fine lenses they could have at their disposal for the same amount of
dollars expended, or less. YMMV.
