Don't know why, but except for some small stores, and big box stores like Circuit City, we aren't that empty yet in the SF Bay Area. But when I took a trip up to Chico, CA, a few months ago, I went around a mall there. More than 1/2 empty. Rather spooky. Not sure why the belly-up-store thing is so uneven.
