I used manual focus exclusively until about five years ago. But I'm over sixty and my eyes aren't good enough to focus accurately when quickness is an issue. More importantly, autofocus has progressed to the point where it's very good, and even someone with good eyes can benefit from electronics that allow one to be instantly reactive.
I'm prety much in the same boat you are (except that you are much older than I). AF has been around for almost 3 decades in SLR cameras, it should be perfected to the point of usability by now.
