Ann, I don't know if this will help at all, but...awhile back I started to develop a lighter band on the upper third of the scan. I am using an Minolta Scan Dual II. I tried cleaning and all sorts of things. I was very unhappy thinking I might have to send it back to the manufacturer for repair. One day, I tried using Hamrick's Vuescan software and lo and behold, the light band went away. I have never seen it since while using Vuescan. Basically, what I thought was a hardware problem was really a software problem.
Consider, have you changed or upgraded anything - OS, scanner driver, photo editing software, etc. Hope this helps.
