Do you not see performance disadvantages to external drives?
Yes, they're slower, even Firewire-800 drives. The fastest of the
externals use an eSATA interface and can use SATA 150 drives to their
bandwidth capacity. You might have to add a card to get the eSATA
interface, though they're cheap.
I put a RocketRaid into my machine and have a couple of external boxes
attached to it via passthroughs. It reports the two internal drives that are
attached to it as SATA 300 and the externals as SATA 150s, which is correct,
as I forgot to change the jumpers on the external drives before I installed
them.
Whether it is running the drives at the reported speed is another thing, and
that I do not know.
I think my motherboard will support 8 SATA 300 drives, 6 as internal and 2as
external, but I hooked my DVD drives to the external plugs on the MB rather
than hard drives.
I also use the /3gb switch in my boot.ini to give XP the ability to direct
more memory to applications.
This and making 4 of the internal drives into striped RAIDs had given me a
fairly fast machine.
The downside is it needs an 800 watt power supply to run everything.
