Hey Frank, don't knock the Victor! I learnt to drive on one of those, a
driving school car. My Dad had a Vauxhall Velox at the time, so there was
some advantage in both cars having the same peculiarities (like
steering-column shift). The Velox later died when the rear spring came
through the floor pan, butting up against the rear seat squab, and causing
my grandmother to remark, "Ted, this car's not very comfortable."

Actually the Victor was thought of as cutting-edge design at the time,
looking as it did like three boxes welded together rather than the more
rounded cars of the era. English Victors didn't have the fins that yours
had.

I don't know about that. We had an early 60's Vauxhall Victor Deluxe
that was pretty amazing.

It was up on blocks all winter long, was underpowered, got lousy fuel
economy, had practically no passenger room and a small trunk.

It had an ignition/starter motor switch in the engine compartment (I
remember it was a huge soft black rubber button), and I recall my Dad
spending many hours under the hood constantly pressing it after trying
to effect repairs. Given the car's reliability that button was the
only well-thought-out part of the car.

On top of all that it might have been the ugliest car I've ever seen
(what were my parents thinking?):

It lasted all of about three years before it died.

Then we bought a Rambler.

They don't make 'em like that any more.

cheers,
frank
