The AF button can be put to use in different ways.

1) On the K20D it can be useful if you're in the Live View Mode.
Pressing the AF button pops the mirror back down, focuses the lens,
then reverts to mirror up so you're back in live view.  Touching the
shutter button actually takes a photo.  I can't seem to only focus
with the shutter button.

2) For normal photography, when I had a problem with my right hand, I
found the auto-focus on half-press much too sensitive and difficult to
use.  I disabled the half-press and used the AF button.
