One other question is what mode were you using (Matrix,
Center-Weighted or spot) - I have found that matrix can give unusual
readings at times with subjects with minor adjustment to the
composition - the reason is that it is reading the entire frame and
assigning some weight to each part - so the background and foreground
can have a profound effect on the exposure - easily in the range you
experienced.  Personally, I almost always use Center-weighted and
don't see those problems.  Perhaps something to look in to.
