My digital SLRs are also my first autofocus and matrix-metering SLRs. I don't think digital makes much difference, except that the incremental costs are so low that you can shoot to your heart's content. Auto-everything has tended to make me lazy about focus and exposure so I get more photos that are slightly out of focus than when I had to focus manually. However, when I make an effort it's all perfectly ok. It probably helps to have been brought up on manual cameras.
