So far, I'd say that the difference is basically the extra stop and the USM focusing. Both are very sharp. But I need that extra stop for indoor events. When I shot a courthouse wedding and had to work without flash, I lost a few shots due to 1/15th second shutter speeds. At 1/30th, it would have been a piece of cake.
