The standard historical take on Japan in WWII is that Japan's aggression was the work
of Tojo, and other "evil warlords". It was said that Hirohito was an unwilling puppet
- although it has since come to light that he may have willingly participated in the
War to a larger extent that was
supposed, however since he was "needed" after the War to provide stability, politics
dictated that the "puppet" scenario be promoted.

But as for the citizens of Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Tokyo (which was subjected to
horrendous firestorms from "conventional" bombing), they were innocent. The fact that
they knew that their country was at war with the US and allies doesn't mean that they
had warning that they would be
immolated.

I'm not prepared to say here whether the bombing of civilians is morally right or
wrong, but suffice to say that until WWII (yes, I know the Nazis practised on Madrid
in the Spanish Civil War), it was unthinkable.

Unfortunately, it has become "legal" nowadays. Whether right or wrong, I fear for the
lives of innocents in Afghanistan, should it be determined that Bin Laden was behind
this. Carpet bombing Kabul will solve nothing.
