yes, you probably are. Their traditional philosophy has been to produce
compact bodies with a good feature set, quality build and at a price
that beats the competition. This is why the first slr I bought was an
MX. Their lenses were also quite compact compared to the opposition's,
as well as being optically at least as good as most of the rest. This
is hobgobblingly consistent with the basic philosophy of 35mm
photography (everybody knows that a little body makes a little mind).

perhaps you are with the wrong brand. When all my LXs and good lenses
went walkabout last year I replaced them with Contax bodies and Carl
Zeiss lenses. IMO the CZ lenses are optically better (and hugely more
expensive) than the equivalent Pentax lenses in most respects (not
flare control). On average they're probably not as compact as the Pentax
lenses though, but they handle beautifully.
The bodies I have - 3 RXs - are not as capable or as well made as the
LXs, unfortunately, and the RTSIII was out of reach for the insurance
settlement. But they are ergonomically better than an LX+grip+winder,
imo, and slightly smaller and lighter (a bad thing for you, but a good
thing for me). The size of the RTSIII would probably suit you well.
The argument that you make, which is quite a common one and perfectly
respectable, that the body is just somewhere dark to put the film is
probably true for most systems. But bodies of the LX and F3 vintage
provide extremely useful functionality, and imo it would be worth
buying into a system for the sake of a body like the LX even if the
lens line wasn't quite as good. For that reason I'd have preferred to
replace my Pentax system directly, if the LX and lenses had been available
new.
You also get to collect loads of toys if you have an LX.
