Hi Bill -

Glad you liked them!

If you can believe technical data from someone who gets the year wrong in his copyright notice... here it is:

All shot in manual mode, TTL flash. I set the ambient exposure to be ~1 stop underexposed. That way the flash makes the subject pop a bit from the background.

Karner Blue - ISO 400, 1/350, f16, flash without compensation. It's cropped to be about 75% of the frame.

Halloween Pennant - ISO 400, 1/250, f13, flash without compensation. Cropped horizontally only to make it square, no vertical crop.

Twelve Spotted Skimmer - ISO 400, 1/350, f13, flash without compensation. I cropped a little off the right side, no vertical crop.

As always I open the files to maximum size in Photoshop CS. Brightness, saturation, and sharpness have been tweaked up a bit. I also find that with digital I have to use a monopod, even at shutter speeds of 1/350 I have a hard time getting a really crisp image.

Catch you later -

Wow!!

How about some technical data, Mark, to go along with them?

Here's a mini gallery with three bug shots from the last few days:

Comments and critiques are appreciated.

The Karner Blue is a fairly rare butterfly - I like that shot because it
accentuates the extremely reflective wing scales inside the spots along the
back of the wings. I now have precisely two acceptable shots of this
butterfly - this (and some in camera dupes) and one from last summer. The
dragonflies are pretty common fare.

All shots taken with the *ist-D, AF360FGZ, and A* 200 f4 macro.

I woke up a few days ago to find my eyes swollen and inflamed - somehow
managed to get a nasty eye infection. So I've been shooting in the summer
heat wearing glasses (I'm blind as a bat) and feel like Mr. Magoo out in the

heat and humidity, trying to peer through steamed up lenses... Can't wait to

get back into contacts (hopefully next week!)
