most of the high end audio aficionados that i used to hang around with were
convinced that they were reliable hearers of just about anything you care to
name. most of us, with a little training, can reliably hear the difference
between a lot of high end audio systems. however, how audible those
differences are depend on far too many things including whether you had a
good day at work or not. under controlled double blind conditions, the
number of differences detectable drop considerably compared to open
conditions. most of the high end audiophile's arguments boil down to "i
heard a difference so the more expensive/prestigious system must be better".
i dropped out of the high end audio pursuit when i came to the conclusion
that i would have to spend ten times more than i had already spent to get a
consistently audible improvement in what i already had.
