I don't think we should limit ourselves to the transparent/reflective model.  With the 
digital cameras the sensor can be positioned more freely than the film could, so 
here's my suggestion:

Use the mirror matrix that TI developped for video projectors. It has thousands of 
small mirrors that can be commanded to selectively reflect light in at least two 
different directions, and thus the light can be reflected either toward the view 
finder or toward the sensor, or partially in both directions.  You would get some 
interference effects, but they may be handled.
