I think the original did have then entire base but it also included some
on the bystanders that were distracting.  Also, the only lens I had on
me was a 135 and that's a pretty long tele on the D.  I was pretty far
back, but that gives the shot that "compression" look.

really "balance" each other out, if that makes any sense? The only

that I think would improve it would be to widen the shot slightly and
include the full foot thingy on the cannon on the right side.  I am
