Looking at the specs on two scanners (the new Nikon), I find

The prevailing opinion seems to be that the newer LS 5000 improvement over
the older LS 4000 is incremental and not enough to justify trading in your
old 4000 for. The new coolscan IV (or is it V) is very similar to the LS
4000 in performance. If you are doing a lot of scanning and speed is of the
essence I'd go with the 5000. If not, and the price difference is great
enough, I'd give the less expensive model a good look if it has all the
features I want. The bit depth and DR on both models is very good.
