Actually, I passed through Nikon and Olympus on the way to Pentax. I bypassed Canon cameras because I could not figure out how to take pictures with them (i.e., interface issues). I settled on Pentax because it was the first I found with consistent, reliable, durable light metering. the Nikon and Olympus kept breaking and requiring 're-calibration.' My Minox metering was good but I wanted something with interchangeable lenses and more precision than zone focus.

People who never owned a Pentax camera before on dpreview seem to be
buying the *ist D for a couple of reasons:
* They like the user interface and look and feel
* They like the small size

I expect that if you ask most members of this list why they bought
a Pentax SLR in the first place that those would be two common answers.
The other is probably the quality of lenses.

IMHO Pentax has NOTHING on the other guys here, although it may
well give you better quality for the same price and have more
useful gradations in price/quality (Canon seems to have no "middle level" lenses).
