i suggest trying a couple of more multipass scans on images that have large areas of even or slowly changing tone to see if the difference is enough for you to care about. i have a Nikon Coolscan 4000ED and i always use 4X multisampling. total scan time is about 4 minutes per 35mm slide. preview and fiddling time before i start scanning not included.
