I have the Canoscan FS4000,which has a 14 bit converter.

It's a good scanner and I have no problems with the results - but it is not
very fast, even on an SCSI card. Doing multi-pass scanning would not be an
option for large batches, though I will definitely do more of it with scans
for prints.
