BTW, i didn't pay close attention, which scanner do you have and how many bits is the A/D converter rated at? the noise level is one of those specs that never get mentioned but is one of the main differences between the high end and the mid range 35mm slide scanners. the dpi difference is the other one.
I have the Canoscan FS4000,which has a 14 bit converter.
It's a good scanner and I have no problems with the results - but it is not very fast, even on an SCSI card. Doing multi-pass scanning would not be an option for large batches, though I will definitely do more of it with scans for prints.
