Hi, Malcolm,

First, I guess the lighting in Toronto's subways are better than your Tubes. In car shots are no problem, and it seems that the lighting in the stations is not too far off the lighting in the cars, so one can get some interesting shots coming into stations. I don't have any taken with the LX blown up yet, but when I do, I'll post them.

Here's a fun one of my beautiful girls, taken with the MX and the Viv 3.8 19mm, probably shot at round 1/30th wide open:

Just to show you how bright our subways are.

Second, my I don't know how old my LX is, but it isn't that noisy. Probably about the same as the MX, but then I'm not a freak about these things. Suffice to say both are noticeably louder than my little Leica, and the Leica is louder than my Yashica Mat and Electro 35 (both leaf shutters). But, the LX ain't bad at all, and really, for shooting in the street, traffic noise masks it pretty well any way.

How do I like my LX? I love it. Except for a little light leak coming in from the back door, which is being solved by black tape right now, and will be dealt with once my Leica is back from the shop (a little blade-cleaning in the lens - oil...).

cheers,
frank

Subject: Using LXs, was: A turning point?

Three quick points:

1. Very few would guess you were using the camera looking partially
dismantled! I've tried taking shots on our Underground network, with little
success. Even on parts of the system that run above ground, the amount of
light is a problem - and there's nothing worse than using a flash for making
it obvious - or the vibration at slower shutter speeds ruins the shot. The
fluorescent tube lighting in stations casts a weird light on film too.

2. LX noise. Going by the serial numbers, my oldest is noticeably nosier
than the newest. Was something done to later cameras (?), or, as I suspect,
just the older camera showing a little more wear. A CLA made the older
camera much more usable and got rid of a 'sticky' problem, but made no
difference to the noise level.

3. Now you have had your LX a while, what do you think of it? It still
remains my favourite camera.

Malcolm
