Hey Cory! I second what Tyrone advised, that's how I do "sharpening" in Photoshop, switch to Lab color, switch to the Lightness channel, then use USM at settings like Tyrone suggested. You can vary the amount and I've heard some advise that if the picture is already fairly sharp you can get more subtle results by lower the pixel radius below 1.0 to 0.8 or the like.
Of course I have several versions of the USM process (with slightly different settings) saved as PS actions, so when I want to try them on the next image, it goes much faster. Just watch out for trying to Cntrl-Z UNDO of these multi-step actions, they do _not_ UNDO with a single Cntrl-Z. I usually save with a new name before experimenting and use Revert instead. I also have learned from the web how to use USM for "local contrast enhancement". There are a few articles around if you Google, one on Luminous Landscape I remember. This is sort-of the opposite of the sharpening we discussed above, I forget the settings (I use these things as PS actions after the first time, so I forget the details) but someone here will remember or you can do that Google search. Great techniques, much more to learn, thank goodness for the online community! - THaller
