Partly correct: It's true that the "A" pin disconnects in the OFF
position and connects in the ON position but, because the corresponding
pin in the camera body is recessed, a K/M lens will *not* short the "A"
contact in the camera. This is the root of the problem.

It doesn't know what kind of lens is present, but it knows that the "A"
pin isn't shorted they way it should be. The camera doesn't care if this
is because you have a K/M lens mounted or if you are using an "A" lens
with the aperture ring in the wrong position.
