the fact that you point the camera and look through the viewfinder first constitutes composition, no matter how temporary. i have a wide selection of focus points on my two most advanced cameras. nonetheless, i have to point in the general direction of what i want to photograph to see where the focus points lie relative to the current framing. until i have the composition i want in the viewfinder, i don't know which focus point to choose.
