I did it all the time. Before the darkroom was adequately "dark", that is.
The one thing I've been frustrated with lately is daylight tanks. It takes so long to empty them that it's difficult to time film processing correctly. Now I'm using them with a twist. When I get w/in a minute of ending the dev process, lights go off and the lid comes off. The film can be immediately moved from developer to stop to fix w/o the 10-20 second delay. Hence the tank is only for developing and not for stop or fix.
