Per se, not even that. The problem is caused by using the sensor in a camera and with lenses that were designed for a different image size.
Also, the chips have dielectric filters on the sensors separating the colours. These filters are very angular dependent. Traditional wide angles tend to focus light toward the edges of the film at a sharp angle, and are therefore not very suitable for digital cameras.
