You're doomed.
When ME has hardware it likes, it's fine. When it doesn't like something
then the show's over and there's no arguing with it. ME has no support
at all for real mode device drivers and *automatically* substitutes a
virtual device driver when it finds something trying to call up a real
mode driver...and there's NO way to turn this "feature" off. And if
Windows ME's choice of drivers is wrong or if the driver it selects just
doesn't *quite* work...say good night. I suspect this (or something very
similar) is the root of your problem.

Check to see if there are updated drivers on the web for both the USB
card and the scanner. If not, you need to either upgrade (Windows 2000
is my recommendation) or go back to Windows 98.

Email me privately if you need more info.
