Ya.. it's expensive and it's a stop slower than the Canon 16-35 2.8 L lens (also targetted at APS sized DSLR users) - but guess what, it's about the same price as the Canon. What it loses in speed it gains in FOV/AOV.
So the price isn't outrageous, especially if you're going to use it on a "standard" film SLR (F100 for example). Price points for high end Canon and Nikon goods are expensive but they seem to be in line with current pricing of their other products so it's not that incredible.
