The way I look at it is just the opposite. Not being a professional, the 
interest and the passion justifies the cost.

If I was into cars in a big way, and wanted a Lamborghini, I'd work 
towards getting one - even if it was prohibited for use on the public 
highway, never mind limited to 55 mph.

I'd love a 1Ds, and at some point in the future, I dare say I will try 
and achieve that ambition. For now though, a D60 and some food on the 
table is a good compromise :-)

Disclaimer: I am not rich. I sold a lot of good gear and took out a loan 
to get what I wanted. Personal fulfilment needs no justification !
