As one who has judged a number of photo contests and competitions, I
heartily agree. The best we ever did with this was that one year, Paul
Scranz, Howard Bond and I all picked our own "first place" winners and then
wrote a explanation of why we liked them. All three were very different
pictures and none of us agreed with the others' choices.
I'm pretty sure that a "voted" best-of PUG list and a selection made by any
one of us would be pretty substantially different. And what's the use?
I don't see any reason not to try Tom Hoving's exercise in delectation:
whenever he walked into any room in a museum, he would quickly pick out the
art he thought was best. I suggest that if anyone wants to hone his eye and
improve his aesthetic awareness, just pick the PUG picture you think is best
and explain to the rest of us why you think so. We might not agree with you,
but it would improve all of our understanding and our ability to "see" that
picture, I'd bet.
Could make for some good friendly arguments, too.
