People just gotta stop thinking that Hollywood is real. Aside - nothing in
"Saving Private Ryan" precludes or suggests that other nations were major
participants in the D Day landings.

FYI - While I was living in Toronto, I was exposed to (government moral
building) ads that claimed Canada to be the inventor of basketball!

The lenses (and coatings) - purportedly - were developed for high altitude
(10 to 15 miles up), ultra high resolution, ultra high contrast aerial
photography. The coatings developed by various optical companies were
recognized to be quarter wave impedance transformers and the (rather simple)
math was developed. Multiple coatings were designed to increase bandwidth
and reduce loss. Control of the deposition thickness was a major problem.
Probably of success was reduced dramatically with the number of coats
deposited. Initial coating methods were not amenable to mass production and
all lenses were individually crafted - purportedly, this is rumor.
