Bob,
I have a Bogen/Manfrotto long lens support. It is stable,
but it's really inconvenient. That is because it attaches to both
the camera lens and the body. It's pretty bulky, too....
If you are patient (unlike me, I guess :+) it does work pretty well.

which looks like a generic solution. I can't tell how
stable it is, but it only cost $10 to try it out. If
it is stable, it only costs about $50.
