like you, i also got one of these.  For my uses, communications, the
internal mic is fine.

With most laptops having one jack, you may plug either a microphone or a 
headset into it and the computer will ask you which one you are using.  
It then adjusts to your choice.  If you want to use both a microphone 
and a headset at the same time, then you are best off using a USB mic.
